What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based treatment that helps people heal from the emotional pain of traumatic or distressing experiences. Originally developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR is endorsed by major health organizations such as the World Health Organization – as an effective approach for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions.

What Happens in EMDR Sessions?

In EMDR sessions you will first of all learn resourcing somatic practices, such as ‘safe place’ and ‘vault’. On their own these can be used on a day to day basis, to help with flashbacks and creating a sense of safety.

Once these are well established, we move onto using guided bilateral stimulation – such as eye movements, taps, or tones – that activate both sides of the brain. This process helps your nervous system reprocess “stuck” memories, reducing their emotional charge and allowing for more adaptive beliefs to form.

Who Can Benefit From EMDR Therapy

EMDR can help people who have experienced trauma, grief, abuse, accidents, medical procedures, or ongoing stress. It is also useful for phobias, performance anxiety, and negative self-beliefs rooted in past experiences.

Because EMDR targets the way the brain stores and processes memories, it can often bring faster, longer-lasting relief than traditional talk therapy alone. Many clients report feeling lighter, calmer, and more empowered after a course of EMDR sessions.

My Unique Approach to EMDR:

EMDR isn’t the only tool in my toolkit. I have found that combining it with other approaches can open up the potential of EMDR, even with people who may have found EMDR unhelpful in the past. For instance:

  • We may use Transforming Touch® to bring more nervous system regulation, before moving to an EMDR approach.
  • We may build a foundation of somatic enquiry and resourcing, supporting more body based awareness can allow for deeper insights to surface through the EMDR.
  • A parts (or plural) approach enables your inner awareness to perceive younger parts that may emerge through the EMDR processing. These parts can further be soothed and supported through Transforming Touch®.

Most of all, my approach to EMDR prioritises the therapeutic alliance, through consent and attunement to your individual needs.
